Record Comments: The idea for
this special-project, comedy-concept record was first conceived for
the1962 animated featurette A Symposium On Popular Songs. Hosted by the Disney animated character Ludwig Von
Drake, the short film featured seven songs written by Richard M. Sherman
and Robert B. Sherman. Along with the musical talents and arrangements
of Tutti Camarata, the featurette illustrated the change in music
through the years with stop-motion musical segments. The
animated short film was nominated for an Academy Award and lead to the
production of this album a few years later. Six of the songs from
the featurette (tracks 1, 2, 4, 6, 7 and 10) were included along with six
new ones. The
vocal cast on the record includes Paul Frees, Gloria Wood, Jerry Madison, Bill Lee, Betty Taylor, Skip Farewell, Betty Allan, Diane Pendleton, Dick Sherman, Billy Strange, Billy Storm, Ronald
Hicklin, Bob Swirn, Carol Lombard and Allan Capps. The last two
tracks are slightly longer than listed on the back cover. The
album was titled by the Sherman Brothers, who are well known for their
slick lyrics and unique "Shermanized" vocabulary. It was
their way of giving a musical "panorama of Tin Pan Alley."
The record was issued in both stereo and mono versions.
